Wiring

The most time consuming project so far has been fixing and removing the unnecessary wiring. Since the car originally came with a 4 cylinder, we had to make a number of changes just get the new v6 to start and run correctly. The 4 cylinder dash wiring harness provides power to a separate ECU relay which when cycled will power up the ECU which triggers the fuel pump, injectors, ignition coils and so on. In the 2.8 and 2.7 V6 engines, that ECU relay is internal. We repinned the dash harness and main fuse box to match the V6 harness and power the ECU directly. Once the engine was running, the next step was to strip out all the accessory wiring. All Audi cars come prewired for every possible option, for both European and NA models. That means that the dash harness and chassis harness include wiring for navigation, heated seats, upgraded sound systems, mobile phones and other items that a track car doesn’t need. In the end something like 35 lbs of wiring was removed from both harnesses and everything was simplified to the bare necessities such as lights, wipers, fuel pump and instrumentation.
